Prior to coming to NC State, Boyer spent a year and a half as Deputy Director of Athletics at George Washington University where he coordinated all aspects of the department's marketing, ticket sales, multimedia, fundraising and communications efforts, while overseeing three sports and assisting in the overall operations of the Department of Athletics and Recreation.

In his time at Maryland, he was responsible for overseeing marketing and sponsor services, media relations, ticket sales and services, multimedia production/video services, and four athletics programs: men's and women's soccer, softball and wrestling. He led negotiations for the department's apparel and outfitting partnership with Under Armour and the novelty concessions contract with Barnes and Noble; chaired the athletics department's strategic planning process and served as the department's liaison with multimedia rights-holder CBS Collegiate Sports Properties, website provider CBSsports.com College Network, and the M Club.
Prior to his service at Maryland, Boyer spent five years at Northwestern University where he served from 2004-2006 as Associate Athletic Director for External Affairs after being elevated from Assistant Athletic Director for Marketing and Sponsor Services.
