Longtime standout infielder and 2022 NC State graduate J.T. Jarrett returned to Raleigh to serve as NC State baseball's new director of player and program development, as announced by NC State baseball head coach Elliott Avent on Aug. 17, 2023.
"NC State holds a special place in my heart," Jarrett said. "I'm extremely excited to return to Raleigh.
"I want to thank the entire Mississippi State University baseball staff, along with Tyler Younger and Gulf Coast State College. Both programs gave me a platform to expand my baseball knowledge and grow into this new role. I'm truly thankful for the opportunity coach Avent has given me and look forward to joining this staff, which taught me so much as a player."
Jarrett, who made 226 appearances and 193 starts in an NC State uniform from 2018-22, returned to NC State after spending the past year with the baseball program at Mississippi State. Jarrett finished his Wolfpack career with 33 doubles, 10 homers, 102 RBI and 103 runs scored. Defensively, Jarrett sported a career .980 fielding percentage, recording 302 putouts, 461 assists and just 16 errors out of 779 total defensive chances over his five-year playing career.
"J.T. is coming home," Avent said. "Getting him back in the Red & White and having him join our staff is an incredible asset for our program.
"Early in his playing career, his inherent leadership skills and knowledge of our game were evident, which is not surprising as he is the son of one of college baseball's best coaches [Link Jarrett]. But what really makes J.T. great is his work ethic, his heart and his ability to make everyone around him better. I'm excited for him to share those intangibles with our student-athletes and expect our entire staff and university to benefit from his presence as well."
Jarrett was a key contributor to the Wolfpack's historic run to the 2021 College World Series, which saw the Wolfpack win a Regional Championship in Ruston, Louisiana, and a Super Regional Championship in Fayetteville, Arkansas. In Fayetteville, the Pack knocked off the top-seeded Razorbacks in one of the greatest Super Regional series of all-time. Jarrett started all 55 games at second base while committing just two errors at the position the entire season. Offensively, Jarrett shined during the Pack's successful postseason run, holding a 16-game reached base streak from May 15 to June 12, including a 10-game hitting streak during that span. He was also named to the 2021 ACC All-Tournament Team at second base at the start of the Pack's postseason run.
In the classroom, Jarrett was a five-time ACC Academic Honor Roll recipient and earned All-ACC Academic Team honors as a senior. He graduated from NC State in May 2022 with a bachelor's degree in sport management with minors in business administration and leadership. He also served as the baseball team's representative on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee from 2020-21.
Jarrett most recently served as assistant coach at Gulf Coast State College this past summer, working under fellow NC State graduate Tyler Younger, a former graduate manager and bullpen catcher for the Wolfpack from 2014-16.
During his stint in Starkville, Jarrett helped facilitate and manage recruiting visits on campus, assisted with all camps and clinics, and aided in the maintenance of the baseball facility and indoor practice facility. Before departing for Panama City, Florida, he earned his master's degree in workforce education leadership from Mississippi State University.
A North Carolina native, Jarrett exceled at Northern Guilford High School in Greensboro, helping lead the Nighthawks to the 2017 North Carolina 3A State Championship as a senior. Jarrett was named the most valuable player in the state championship series and won the state title alongside future Wolfpack teammates Josh Pike and Cameron Cotter.
