ATLANTA, Ga. – Another close game between No. 14 NC State and No. 3 Georgia Tech saw the Yellow Jackets escape with a 6-4 victory Saturday night at Mac Nease Baseball Park.
With the Pack trailing in the top of the eighth, Andrew Wiggins stepped up as a pinch hitter and tied the game 4-4 with one swing of the bat after hitting his fourth home run of the season.
The tie did not last long, as the Yellow Jackets responded with a two-run eighth, which ultimately decided the series victory. Anderson Nance (1-1) took the loss after working two innings, allowing two runs in the eighth on four hits, with two walks and three strikeouts.
After a clean seventh inning, a leadoff walk in the eighth started the frame, and the Yellow Jackets capitalized with a sacrifice bunt, triple, and single to regain the lead.
Ty Head prevented further damage by robbing what would have been a three-run home run with a leaping catch over the wall, keeping the Pack in the game.
The first five batters faced by Wolfpack starter Jacob Dudan reached base, and Georgia Tech scored twice. Dudan then settled down and retired the next 10 batters in a row, including three straight strikeouts across the third and fourth innings.
Ten of the last 14 batters Dudan faced were retired via strikeout, marking the fourth game this season he has reached double digits in strikeouts. Dudan pitched six innings, allowing four runs on nine hits with three walks.
Offensively, the Pack collected nine hits; Rett Johnson went 2-for-3, Brayden Fraasman had a two-RBI night, and Ty Head doubled, adding an RBI and a run scored.
After Georgia Tech took the lead in the first, the Wolfpack responded with two runs of their own in the top of the second inning as Fraasman brought in two with a two-out, two-strike single. Bargo, who led off the inning with a walk, and Head, who doubled, both scored.
Head gave the Pack its first lead of the series with a fielder's choice at the top of the third. The Pack had loaded the bases with just one out but managed only one run.
Georgia Tech took the lead in the bottom of the sixth after loading the bases with no outs. After a strikeout for the first out, Kent Schmidt singled to right field, driving in two runs and making it 4-3; it was Schmidt's third RBI of the night.
Four different Yellow Jackets posted multi-hit games, including three players with three-hit nights. Caden Gaudetter (2-0) got the win after tossing 3.1 innings and allowing just the Wiggins home run.
Wiggins' home run in the eighth was the first hit for the Pack since the fifth inning, as their comeback fell short after a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
NC State and Georgia Tech will wrap up the series tomorrow, Sunday, March 29th, at 3 p.m. on the ACC Network, with the Wolfpack looking to break a five-game losing streak.
