GREENVILLE, N.C. – For the third time this season, freshman Anderson Nance came out of the bullpen and tossed five brilliant innings to lead the Wolfpack to a 4-1 win over in-state rival East Carolina Tuesday Night from Clark-LeClair Stadium.
The win is the first for the Wolfpack in Greenville since 2022 and ends a two-game losing streak to the Pirates.
Nance (5-1) came on for the Wolfpack in the bottom of the fourth inning and hit the first batter he faced. After that, Nance retired 13 straight Pirate batters, allowing just one hit coming in the eighth inning with two outs and finishing with five strikeouts. Nance now leads the team in wins with five in 12 appearances on the season.
Wolfpack (22-11) pitching was steady throughout, holding the home team to just three hits. Cooper Consiglio got the start and went two innings, allowing just one run on one hit, one strikeout, and three walks. Jaxon Lucas relieved him and got three outs, allowing just a hit and a walk. Jacob Dudan got the ninth and made quick work of ECU with two strikeouts and a ground ball for his second save of the year.
Josh Hogue, Chris McHugh, and Justin DeCriscio each had a two-hit night for the NC State offense. Hogue homered in his second consecutive game, and DeCriscio added his 25th RBI of the year in the top of the ninth for an insurance run. Matt Heavner brought a run in after putting down a sacrifice bunt to get a run across. It was his 12th of the season, which continues to lead the country.
ECU starter Sean Jenkins (3-3) went two innings, allowing two runs on three hits and two strikeouts. The Pirates didn't have an extra-base hit in the game and made two errors, which led to two unearned runs.
After ending the last game with a home run, Hogue picked up where he left off, taking the second pitch of the game deep to put NC State up 1-0 in the top of the first. It was Hogue's seventh long ball of the season.
The Wolfpack added another in the second, capitalizing off a Pirate error. Trenton Lyons recorded his second hit of the season, moving Lanphere from first to third. The nation's leader in sacrifice bunts, Matt Heavner, layed one down between the pitcher and first base, bringing in another run and a 2-0 lead.
Consiglio found himself in a jam in the bottom half of the second as the Pirates had runners on second and third with only one out. A hard-hit ground ball to Heavner at third allowed him to throw home to get the runner. But a walk loaded the bases, and Consiglio dug deep and struck out the next batter on three pitches to put another zero on the board.
Consiglio started the third, but Lucas relieved him after hitting the Pirate leadoff man. In relief, he kept ECU to just one run following a sacrifice fly but allowed nothing else to cross, keeping the Pack lead at 2-1.
NC State once again went to its bullpen and Nance to the start the fourth inning. Another hit Pirate led off the inning, but a ground ball to second got two quick outs after a 4-6-3 double play, and Nance put up a zero in the frame.
The second ECU error led to the third Wolfpack run as Luke Nixon lifted the ball to deep right field, and right in front of the wall, the right fielder dropped it, allowing DeCriscio to come around and score, pushing the lead back to two.
In the ninth, Ty Head's 37th walk of the season came around to score after a Hogue single and a McHugh ground out put him on third. DeCriscio came to the plate, and his single found a gap to score Head and put the Pack up 4-1 where it would finish.
Up Next: NC State will welcome Louisville for a three-game series at the Doak, beginning on Friday, April 11th, at 6 p.m. The Cardinals will be the first ranked opponent NC State has faced this year, and all three games will be broadcast on ACCNX.
