RALEIGH - A 53rd-minute goal from Frankie DeFrancesco lifted 10th-ranked NC State men's soccer to a 1-0 win over Clemson on Friday night at Dail Soccer Stadium, giving the Pack its second conference victory of the season.
The opening half was a scoreless battle, with NC State outshooting the Tigers 8-6. The Pack generated several quality chances, including a 22nd-minute strike from Drew Lovelace that rattled off the crossbar. Taig Healy also forced a save late in the half to keep the match level heading into the break.
Just eight minutes into the second half, DeFrancesco broke the deadlock. Following an Isaac Heffess throw-in, a loose ball inside the box fell to the sophomore, who slotted it into the goal for his first score as a member of the Wolfpack.
NC State controlled play the rest of the way, holding Clemson to just three shots in the second half and nine overall, the Tigers' second-lowest total of the season. Only one of those shots was on target, as goalkeeper Logan Erb needed just one save to secure his 10th clean sheet of the year.
Offensively, the Pack finished with 14 shots, led by Healy with four attempts. Riley Moloney added three shots, including two on frame, as NC State improved to 9-1-2 overall.
