CHARLOTTE, N.C. – NC State baseball first baseman Garrett Pennington was named the ACC Player of the Week after helping lead the Wolfpack to a 3-1 week and a series victory at No. 10 Virginia this past weekend.
Pennington, a graduate student from Lenexa, Kansas, batted .647 with a team-high 11 hits, 11 runs scored, 10 RBI, three home runs and 22 total bases. Pennington recorded a multi-hit game in all four of the Pack's matchups this past week, highlighted by three straight three-hit performances in NC State's series victory over Virginia at Disharoon Park.
Pennington opened the week with a 2-for-4 performance with two runs scored, three RBI and a double against Norfolk State. The Wolfpack first baseman then opened the series in Charlottesville with a 3-for-5 night at the plate with a double and a home run. Pennington's two-run homer in the top of the eighth proved to be the game-winning runs for the Pack in the 7-5 win.
The Lenexa, Kansas native then homered for the second straight game in Saturday's contest before going 3-for-4 with four runs scored, three RBI and a home run in the 13-5 series-clinching win on Sunday. Pennington's towering two-run shot cleared the batter's eye at Disharoon Park and marked Pennington's third homer in three days. The Pack9 first baseman came close to a multi-homer game Sunday, but Virginia centerfielder Bobby Whalen made a leaping grab over the center-field wall to rob Pennington of his fourth hit of the game.
Pennington now ranks first on the Wolfpack roster with 55 runs scored and leads the Wolfpack with a .366 batting average, 29 runs scored, 41 hits, 10 doubles and 11 homers in ACC play. Eleven of Pennington's 14 home runs this season have come in league play.
