INDIANAPOLIS – NC State women's golf senior Isabel Amezcua and junior Lauren Olivares Leon both earned individual bids to compete in NCAA Championships regional action. They are two of six individuals who have been selected to play in the Bermuda Run Regional hosted by Wake Forest, with play set to take place May 6-8 at Bermuda Run Country Club.
This marks the program's 12th season in a row being represented in regional action. It is also the Wolfpack's first time being represented by two different individuals at a regional.
The format includes 54 holes of stroke play, with 18 holes played on each of the three days of action. Regional play will take place across the country at six different sites – Auburn, Ala. (hosted by Alabama), Bermuda Run, N.C. (hosted by Wake Forest), Bryan, Texas (hosted by Texas A&M), Cle Elum, Wash. (hosted by Washington), Lansing, Mich. (hosted by Michigan State) and Las Vegas, Nev. (hosted by UNLV). Each site has 12 teams and six individuals competing. The top five teams and the low individual not on an advancing team from each regional will move on to play in the championships at Omni LaCosta Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif., from May 17-22.
Olivares Leon paces the Pack with a 72.44 stroke average in 2023-24, and her junior campaign was highlighted by an individual win at the Briar's Creek Invitational in March. It marked her second year earning medalist honors at that event. She is coming off of a top-10 finish at the ACC Championships where she placed tied for seventh. A native of Celaya, Mexico, Olivares Leon has finished in the top 10 of three tournaments this season and also has five top-20 finishes. In her first tournament of the year, she shot an NCAA record 60 (-11) with 13 birdies in the first round of the Cougar Classic.
Amezcua has compiled five top-20 individual finishes and a pair of top-10 finishes during 10 tournaments played in 2023-24. She is coming off the highest finish of her season and her career after placing in a tie for fifth at last week's ACC Championships. Amezcua shot under par in all three rounds at the conference event, with her cumulative score of 211 (-5) marking the lowest score any Pack player has posted at ACCs. The Mexico City native has a season stroke average of 73.75 and has come in at or under par in 10 rounds played during her senior campaign.
