John Mackey Award Names Trent Pennix to Preseason Watchlist

RALEIGH, NC – Graduate student Trent Pennix has been named to the 2023 John Mackey Award Watchlist. The Mackey Award is given annually to the most outstanding collegiate tight end.

Entering his sixth season with NC State, Pennix has played in 42 games, accumulating 522 yards and eight touchdowns in his career with the Wolfpack. He started his career at running back but has become one of the team's most versatile players from his tight end spot.

The Raleigh, N.C. native graduated in December of 2022 with a degree in criminology.

The award is named in honor of John Mackey, a five-time Pro Bowl and three-time All-NFL selection. In 1992, Mackey became only the second tight end to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The John Mackey Award will be presented at The Home Depot College Football Awards Show on ESPN in December.
