RALEIGH, NC – Earlier this week, senior NC State long snapper Joe Shimko was recognized for his contributions ON the field. Today, his off-the-field service earned him a mention on the 2023 Wuerffel Trophy watch list.
Consisting of 110 players from college football's FBS, The Wuerffel Trophy is college football's Premier Award for Community Service and one of the most meaningful awards in collegiate sports.
Shimko has been involved in numerous charitable organizations throughout his career, including raising $160k for the Vin Gopal Civic Association and the Monmouth Ocean Foundation and $25k for GiGi's Playhouse in Raleigh.
An active member in the community both in Raleigh and in his hometown of Belmar, N.J., Shimko was nominated to the 2023 Allstate American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Good Works Team earlier this summer. He has also been named to the preseason watch list for the Mannelly Award, given to the nation's top long snapper.
The Wuerffel Trophy is named after Danny Wuerffel, the 1996 Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback from the University of Florida who parlayed his success on the football field into a lifetime of service. The Wuerffel Trophy embodies Danny's commitment to being a humanitarian while honoring student-athletes who are inspired to serve others and positively impact society.
The 2023 recipient will be invited to join Wuerffel in New York City to attend the Heisman Trophy ceremonies, including the press conference, televised announcement show, and the gala.
