Atlanta, Ga -- Wolfpack head coach Dave Doeren has been named to the Preseason Watch List for the 2023 Dodd Trophy Presented by PNC Bank. The list includes 21 of the nation's top college football coaches representing all Power Five conferences, as well as the AAC, Mountain West and an independent.
Â
Managed by Peach Bowl, Inc. and presented by PNC Bank, The Dodd Trophy, college football's most coveted national coaching award, celebrates the head coach of a team who enjoys success on the gridiron while also stressing the importance of scholarship, leadership and integrity – the three pillars of legendary coach Bobby Dodd's coaching philosophy.
Â
Doeren enters his 11th season at NC State with the second-longest tenure in the ACC and the seventh-longest in the Power 5 conferences. He has guided NC State to at least eight wins in five of the last six seasons, with three nine-win campaigns in that time.
Â
The Wolfpack ranks third in the ACC in conference wins since 2018 and eight of his 10 Wolfpack squads have qualified for postseason bowls - the most of any coach in program history.
Â
Between 2017-22, 20 of his players have been drafted by the NFL - including an ACC-best seven in 2017 - the sixth-highest total nationally. Three of his players have gone on to be first-round picks, including OT Ikem Ekwonu in 2022, C Garrett Bradbury in 2019 and DE Bradley Chubb in 2018.
Â
The Wolfpack has boasted 56 Academic All-ACC performers under his guidance - including a program-high 13 in 2022 - and in 2018, had a player named to the prestigious NFF National Scholar-Athlete Team.
Â
Three of his players have won four national awards. Bradley Chubb won the Nagurski Trophy and the Hendricks Award in 2017, Garrett Bradbury was the recipient of the 2019 Rimington Trophy, and Christopher Dunn won the Lou Groza Award last season.
Â
The watch list was created through a selection process by the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation and Peach Bowl, Inc., taking into consideration each program's graduation rate, Graduation Success Rate (GSR), commitment to service and charity in the community, projected success for the 2023 season and Academic Progress Rate (APR).
Â
Coaches named to this year's preseason watch list were required to have an APR higher than 980. Additionally, coaches in the first year with their current teams were not included as they are ineligible to receive The Dodd Trophy until their second year with their program.
