Raleigh, N.C. – NC State long snapper Joe Shimko has been nominated to the 2023 Allstate American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Good Works Team; the organization announced Tuesday morning.
"These players embody the best of what college football stands for character, selflessness, and the willingness to serve and give to others," AFCA Executive Director Todd Berry said. "The AFCA proudly stands alongside Allstate and each of these players' families and communities to applaud their inspirational work."
The Belmar, N.J. native has been involved in numerous charitable organizations over the past two seasons, both in his home state and the greater Raleigh area. In 2022, he raised funds for two New Jersey charities: $80k for the Vin Gopal Civic Association, which embarked to benefit the food pantry of Red Bank, and $80k for the Monmouth Ocean Foundation for children to help the building of the Achieve Academy, a facility that supports adults with autism who have aged out the public school system. Shimko raised an additional $25k for GiGi's Playhouse in Raleigh.
"My father has always instilled in me the need to give back," Shimko said. "Growing up, I always participated in charitable opportunities. I remember helping to rebuild a dilapidated handicapped ramp on the side of a community member's home. I have volunteered many times with Habitat for Humanity, as well as with the Challenger Program through my high school baseball team, where we would play ball with challenged children through the spring. While in North Carolina, I have had the opportunity to spend time volunteering with GiGi's Playhouse and the Miracle League of the Triangle, both with the football team and without."
Just one of 136 nominees in college football, Shimko has already raised money for the two New Jersey foundations as well as GiGi's, and he hopes to add more Raleigh area organizations to support with a goal to raise more money in 2023.
Graduating in 2022 with a degree in sport management, Shimko was a second-team AFCA All-American and Academic All-ACC performer for 2021 and 2022; he has been named to the ACC Academic Honor Roll three times in his career.
Established in 1992, the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team is one of college football's most coveted community service awards. The nominees spend their free time working to change lives by mentoring youth, feeding the hungry, and donating their earnings. Some have even established their own non-profit organizations. They've also maintained excellent grades and obtained Dean's List honors, among other academic awards.
