RALEIGH – NC State football returned to action on Saturday for its annual spring game as the Red team defeated the White team 41-10 on a rainy afternoon in Carter-Finley Stadium.
The red squad got moving quickly, grabbing an early 7-0 lead after its first drive of the game ended with Jordan Houston scampering for an eight-yard touchdown run with 10:50 remaining in the first quarter.
The white team got on the board later in the opening quarter as a 34-yard field goal from Collin Smith shrunk its deficit to 7-3.
The first frame ended with a pair of interceptions returned for touchdowns, with Tony Gibson's defense picking up right where it left off from the Wolfpack's 2022 campaign. The Pack's defensive unit ended the day with a trio of interceptions and two fumble recoveries.
A pair of Nash County natives in Darius Edmundson and Shyheim Battle compiled the two defensive touchdowns, with Edmondson's 40-yard return giving the white team a 10-7 edge with 2:28 left in the first quarter succeeded by a 58-yard return from Battle with 1:19 left in the opening period to retake the lead for the red team at 14-10.
After closing the first frame with a 14-10 edge, the red team pushed its lead to 21-10 with a one-yard touchdown run from Michael Allen in the opening minute of the second quarter.
A defensive slugfest in the second quarter sent the two squads into the locker rooms for halftime with the red team on top 21-10, with 22 ensuing minutes scoreless action after Allen's touchdown.
The red team broke the drought with 6:36 left in the third quarter on a two-yard run from Delbert Mimms III to grow its lead to 28-10, the building on its lead in the fourth quarter as Terrell Timmons took a screen pass 63 yards to the endzone to move ahead 35-10, and Demi Sumo-Karngbaye scoring from one yard out as time expired to cap a 41-10 victory.
Outside of Smith's 34-yard field goal, the Pack saw a trio of special team members showcase their skills on extra points with Smith, Brayden Narveson, and Kanoah Vinesett combining to go a perfect 6-for-6 after touchdowns.
Three different quarterbacks saw action for the Pack as well, with Brennan Armstorng, M.J. Morris, and Ben Finley each seeing time under center.
With the conclusion of spring practice, NC State will now shift its focus to the regular season where the Wolfpack will face UConn in its season opener on Sept. 2, in Storrs, Conn. The Pack's home opener will take place the following week on Sept. 9, against Notre Dame.
