Terquavion Smith led the Pack with 30 points
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The NC State men's basketball team never trailed in getting past Virginia Tech, 97-77, Wednesday night in the second round of the New York Life ACC Tournament held at Greensboro Coliseum.
NC State shot over 60 percent in both halves of the game, finishing the game with a 61.9 percent field goal percentage which is the best in program history in an ACC Tournament game.
Terquavion Smith led NC State with 30 points on 11-of-13 shooting, including 5-of-7 from three-point range. Smith scored 19 of his 30 points in the first half as the Pack opened up a 27-point halftime lead.
Smith added a game-high eight rebounds.
Jarkel Joiner posted his second double-double of the season – and third of his career - with 20 points and 10 assists.
Ebenezer Dowuona scored all of his career-high 11 points in the opening 20 minutes. Jack Clark also reached double figures scoring all of 11 of his points in the second half.
NC State jumped out to an 8-2 lead barely over two minutes into the game and Virginia Tech never got within one possession again. The Pack took its first double-digit lead of the game on a Dowuona bucket to make it 20-10.
The two teams traded baskets for next eight minutes with NC State holding a 36-24 lead with five minutes left in the first half when the Pack blew the game open.
NC State closed the first half with a 17-2 run to take a 53-26 lead into the halftime locker room.
Virginia Tech didn't get its deficit to under 20 points until under four minutes remained in the game.
Despite DJ Burns only scoring three points, NC State outscored the Hokies, 46-34, in points in the paint.
NC State is back in action Thursday night at 9:30 p.m. when it takes on third-seeded Clemson. The ACC quarterfinal matchup will be televised on ESPN.
