Wolfpack Moves to 11-0 on the Season
NC State (11-0) scored in every inning, logging five multi-run team at-bats in Saturday's dominant 21-2 victory over the Highlanders. It was the first time in 13 years the Wolfpack scored in every team at-bat, most recently scoring in all nine innings in a 24-6 road victory at NC Central on March 16, 2010.
Peebles led the way for the Wolfpack, turning in an all-time stat line by going 6-for-6 with three doubles, two home runs, two runs scored and 10 RBI. Peebles' six hits were the most by an NC State hitter since Brian Wright recorded six hits in a 16-8 win over Georgia Tech on March 11, 2001. His 10 RBI mark the most for a Wolfpack hitter since at least 1999.
Entering the weekend, no hitter in Division I had recorded six hits in a single game this season, while his 10 RBI also rank tied for second in all of Division I in 2023.
After Trevor Candelaria smacked his first home run in a Wolfpack uniform to make it 2-0 in the opening inning, Peebles blasted his first home run of the day in the second inning to make it 3-0.
NJIT (4-5) trimmed NC State's lead to 3-2 in the top of the third when Albert Choi homered to left field. The Pack did not allow another run following Choi's two-run homer, scoring the game's final 18 runs.
Candelaria and Peebles again drove in Wolfpack runs in the third, making it 6-2 after the first third of the game. Kalae Harrison then crushed his first home run of the season to right field, making it 7-2. Candelaria blasted his second home run of the game to make it 10-2 with a three-run shot just over the wall in left field.
After homering from the right side of the plate in the second inning, Peebles flipped to the left side of the dish to face the new right-handed pitcher, crushing a two-run homer to right field to make it 12-2 Wolfpack. With the homers from both sides of the plate, he became the first NC State player since Patrick Bailey (Feb. 28, 2020) to homer from both sides of the plate in the same game.
Carter Trice crushed a solo shot to left field in the top of the fifth to make it 13-2, recording a home run for the second straight game.
Starting pitcher Matt Willadsen posted another quality start, moving to 2-0 on the season after pitching 6.0 innings while allowing just five hits with five strikeouts and no walks. Andrew Shaffner and Carson Kelly combined to pitch the final three innings in relief, scattering just one total hit and allowing no walks over the final three innings. As a pitching staff, NC State has allowed no walks in a game four times in 2023 (4-of-11, 36.4% of games).
NC State piled on eight more runs following the fifth frame. Peebles recorded an RBI double in the sixth before the Pack pushed across three runs in the seventh inning behind Eli Serrano III's bases-loaded walk and another two-RBI double from Peebles to make it 17-2 after seven frames.
Just a triple short of NC State's first cycle since 2006, Peebles blistered a ball down the right-field line for his sixth hit of the game. He sprinted out of the box and came up just short of the cycle as he was tagged out at third base trying to stretch a double into a triple.
The Pack scored its 18th and 19th runs of the game behind RBI singles from LuJames Groover III and Serrano III. Peebles' two-RBI double in the eighth pushed the game to its final score at 21-2.
Six Wolfpack batters posted multi-hit performances in Saturday's win – Peebles (six), Trice (three), Candelaria (three), Groover III (two), Serrano III (two) and Will Marcy (two). Candelaria finished his day 3-for-3 with a career-high five runs scored, six RBI, two home runs and a double.
Six members of the Wolfpack scored multiple times in the victory, including five baserunners crossing home plate three or more times. The Pack's 21 runs scored on Saturday marked the first time since March 26, 2019, against Elon that NC State scored exactly 21 runs in a game.
Aside from all his other single-game accomplishments, Peebles also became the first NC State hitter since Jose Torres on April 25, 2021, to hit three doubles in one game.
The Wolfpack looks to go for its 12th straight win to open the season in Sunday's series finale. First pitch at The Doak is set for 1 p.m. and will be broadcasted live on ACC Network Extra.
