RALEIGH – Wolfpack starting pitcher Matt Willadsen pitched a season-high seven innings while allowing just one run in NC State's 7-0 defeat to Virginia on Friday afternoon at Doak Field at Dail Park.
Willadsen provided the Pack with an excellent start, pitching seven innings while allowing just one run and three hits. He struck out a season-high nine batters, capping off his performance with a strikeout in the top of the seventh inning.
Willadsen faced the minimum twice, stranding three runners in scoring position. His 118 pitches in Friday afternoon's contest also marked a season high.
Virginia (17-1, 4-1 ACC) shut out NC State (14-5, 1-4 ACC) for the first time since the Pack was shut out at home against Wake Forest on May 21. The Wolfpack scattered six hits on the afternoon and left 10 runners on base.
The Cavaliers pushed its first run across in the fifth inning behind an RBI groundout. Anthony Stephan led off the inning with a double and was moved over to third via a sacrifice bunt before Harrison Didawick brought home the first run of the game to make it 1-0.
After a pair of scoreless innings in the sixth and seventh, Virginia extended its lead to 5-0 in the top of the eighth inning behind an RBI double from Jake Gelof and then a two-run home run from Kyle Teel to make it 4-0. The Cavaliers tacked on their fifth run of the afternoon when Henry Godbout doubled down the right-field line.
Virginia scored its final two runs of the game behind back-to-back RBI doubles from O'Donnell and Gelof, respectively.
NC State left the bases loaded twice in Friday's setback, loading the bases with two outs in the bottom of the first when Jacob Cozart battled back from a 1-2 count to draw a walk. Payton Green then smacked a sharply hit ground ball right to the shortstop to end the Wolfpack threat in the first. The Pack again loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth, filling all three bases after Eli Serrano III singled to center field. Back-to-back flyouts, however, ended the at-bat.
Cozart recorded another two-hit performance against the Cavaliers. Cozart's .571 batting average, 15 total bases and three walks lead all Wolfpack batters in ACC play.
