NC State finishes first day No. 5 overall in team points
TULSA, OK NC State went 8-1 in the opening round of the NCAA Championships in Tulsa.
Â
The Pack could not have asked for a better start, trailing only Penn State after the first session. The Nittany Lions, the top team in the nation, led all teams with 16.0 points, while the Pack finished 12.5.
Â
NC State got a boost from its big guys, thanks to a technical fall win in the 184-pound class by Trent Hidlay over Zayne Lehman of Ohio.
Â
Owen Trephan ended the morning session with a 9-0 major decision over Cory Day of Binghamton. Kai Orine got the Pack some bonus points early, pinning Gable Strickland of Lock Haven in the second match of the day.
Â
NC State brought four athletes to the NCAA for the first time and it didn't appear the stage was too big. Jarrett Trombley started the day off for the Pack with a 4-3 win over Dean Peterson of Rutgers.Â
Â
Trombley jumped out to a 3-1 lead to gain some confidence. After Peterson tied the match at three, Trombley managed to escape for one point for the final margin.Â
Â
Orine, who was a 15 seed last season, came into Tulsa as a five seed. In his first match Thursday morning, he gained a pinfall over Gable Strickland of Lock Haven in the second period.
Â
After Ryan Jack's 3-2 win over Saul Ervin, freshman Jackson Arrington made his NCAA tournament debut. Arrington and Kinner went into overtime after ending regulation deadlocked at three. Arrington was able to secure a takedown in the extra period for his first NCAA victory.
Â
Ed Scott, the lone NC State wrestler at nationals who didn't make the ACC finals, made up for it. Scott, the No. 8 seed in the 157-pound class, was tied with Jason Kraisser after the first period.
Â
He pulled away with an escape in the second and a takedown in the third for the win.
Â
Alex Faison held a 3-2 lead over Nelson Brands late in the third, before Brands took the victory with a four-point near fall. Faison will have to fight his way to the podium through the wrestlebacks round.Â
Â
