RALEIGH – NC State Athletics has announced the recipients of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina's (Blue Cross NC) Finish Line Scholarship. The two female NC State athletes chosen were Haley Haislip of softball and Abby Arens of women's swimming and diving.
Blue Cross NC has teamed up with five college sports partners across North Carolina to highlight women's athletics through the scholarship program. Each recipient of the Finish Line Scholarship was nominated by their school's athletic program for exemplifying values of leadership, integrity and community.
"Working with North Carolina colleges and universities, Blue Cross NC is helping to level the playing field for women athletes," said Cheryl Parquet, Director of Community Engagement and Marketing Activation for Blue Cross NC. "The Finish Line Scholarship program will not only assist the recipient student-athletes, but also support healthier and more inclusive communities across the state."
Additionally, Blue Cross NC is awarding each scholarship recipients' high school alma mater with funding to support the next generation of women athletes in North Carolina.
Haislip and Arens are both from Raleigh and attended high school just 20 minutes from each other while being standout athletes in their respective sports.
Haislip has started 28 games and appeared in 49 over her first two seasons with the Pack. She was a three-time All-State Infielder in high school and recorded a .535 career batting average alongside a .626 on-base percentage.
The junior is currently majoring in business administration and hopes to pursue marketing upon graduating.
Haislip said, "I'm definitely really honored to be selected to receive this award. I think this is a huge motivator to me to continue to work hard, both on the field and off the field. I think it's always been really important to give everything that I have, whether that's for my teammates, classmates, coworkers, or for myself. I think it's very important to be supportive of other female student athletes."
Arens is an NCAA Championship qualifier, ACC Champion, four-time All-American, two-time Olympic Trials qualifier, and former member of the US National Junior Team. She is a pivotal part of the swimming and diving program as she is a leader in the pool and out.
The junior is currently majoring in environmental science and would like to pursue something with sustainability to help create a better future for everyone.
"I think this scholarship gives me a really great opportunity to pursue my academic goals and future career goals eventually. I think it also provides an opportunity to, hopefully, be an example for other females and female athletes in the future," said Arens.
