SYRACUSE, N.Y. – NC State women's basketball (12-2, 2-1 ACC) overcame a nine-point fourth-quarter deficit to gut out a 56-54 road victory at Syracuse (10-4, 1-2 ACC) on Sunday night.
The Wolfpack outscored the Orange 16-5 in the final 10 minutes of the game to return to the win column and hand Syracuse its first home loss in 10 games this season. It marked the Pack's sixth win in a row over Syracuse and its third in a row inside the JMA Wireless Dome.
Camille Hobby (12 points) was the only member of the NC State squad to score in double figures, but it was another balanced night as eight players tallied points and five of those women posted seven or more.
NC State took an eight-point lead (34-26) into the intermission, but Syracuse scored 10 of the first 12 points of the second half to tie it at 36 midway through the third quarter. The Orange outscored the Pack 23-6 in the third quarter, limiting the Pack to a season-low quarter shooting percentage of .143 (2-of-14) and scoring the last 13 of the period to lead 49-40 entering the final 10 minutes of the outing.
The Wolfpack kicked it into high gear in the fourth quarter. NC State started the period on a 13-0 run, shooting 5-of-9 from the field and limiting Syracuse to 0-of-10 in that same span. A three pointer by Madison Hayes at the 3:11 mark put the Pack in front for good, and it marked the team's first triple since it knocked down its first three-point attempt in the first quarter.
NC State went up by as many as four points twice in the final two and a half minutes of the outing, but Syracuse used a layup and a chance at the charity stripe to draw within one. Georgia Wooley had a chance to tie it at the free throw line but missed the second of her two attempts. Saniya Rivers then knocked down a free throw on the other end and was able to prevent Syracuse from getting a good look on its next possession.
In total, NC State limited Syracuse to 2-of-15 shooting (.133) in the fourth quarter while knocking down 6-of-12 attempts of its own at the same time.
The Pack returns home for back-to-back games against Boston College (Jan. 5) and Virginia (Jan. 8). Thursday's matchup against the Eagles is the only remaining game on the team's regular-season schedule with tickets left for sale through NC State Athletics. Tip-off between NC State and Boston College is set for 7 p.m. and will be streamed live on ACCNX.
