Stokowski Claims 6th Place in 100 Backstroke at FINA World Championships

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA -- All seven of NC State swimming's representatives at the 16th FINA World Swimming Championships competed during the first two days of competition, highlighted by Kacper Stokowski's sixth-place finish in the 100-meter backstroke.Â

50-METER BUTTERFLY
- Wolfpack alum Sirena Rowe, representing Colombia, kicked things off for the Pack during the first prelims session of the meet. Rowe's time of 26.12 seconds in the 50-meter butterfly marked a 22nd place finish and a new personal best time. During the race, Rowe broke her own Colombian national record in the event, the previous mark of 26.42 was recorded by the NC State alum in October.
- On the men's side, current NC State senior Nyls Korstanje posted a 22.53 second 50-meter butterfly to tie for 16th in prelims. In a swim-off for the last qualifying semifinals spot, Korstanje, representing the Netherlands, touched just hundredths of a second after his opponent, ultimately finishing in 17th.
- Representing Greece, former NC State swimmer Andreas Vazaios barely missed the final, finishing in tenth place (1:53.08).
- Kacper Stokowski finished day two of competition with a sixth-place finish in the 100-meter backstroke (49.74). The Poland native swam a 49.33 during semifinals to secure a second place seed for finals, after finishing fifth in prelims (50.14).
- Sophie Hansson and Andrea Podmanikova both competed in the 100-meter breaststroke prelims, with Hansson going 1:04.64 and Podmanikova posting a time of 1:05.31. Hansson secured a spot in the semifinal with her ninth-place finish, while Podmanikova barely missed a chance at a second swim with her 18th place finish. In semifinals, Hansson went 1:04.88 to finish the event in tenth place.
- David Curtiss led off Team USA's prelims swim of the 4x100-meter freestyle relay splitting 48.07, setting up the team for their eventual third place finish in finals. In finals of the same event, Korstanje swam third for the Netherlands (46.96), the team finishing in eighth-place overall.
- In prelims of the mixed 4x50-meter medley relay, Korstanje swam the butterfly leg for his country (22.13), Podmanikova split a 30.47 second breaststroke leg for Slovakia, and Rowe posted a time of 26.16 seconds on the third leg of Colombia's relay.
