Brown-Turner and Johnson Featured on Wooden Award Preseason Watch List

LOS ANGELES – Wolfpack women's basketball's Jakia Brown-Turner and Diamond Johnson added another National Player of the Year watch list to their early-season resumès as both players were named to the 2023 John R. Wooden Award Preseason Top 50 on Tuesday.
As was the case with the 2023 Naismith Trophy Watch List, this marks the second season in a row that NC State has had multiple members of the team start their seasons in consideration for the Wooden Award. The Pack is one of 14 programs across the country with multiple players on the list, and Brown-Turner and Johnson are two of a nation-leading 12 selections from the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Both players were Preseason All-ACC honorees, and Brown-Turner also kicked off her senior campaign on the watch list for the Ann Meyers Drysdale Award.
A native of Oxon Hill, Md., Brown-Turner recently reached the 1,000 career point milestone in her 95th career game. She has been a four-year starter for the Wolfpack who has averaged 10.5 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game since the start of the 2019-20 season.
Johnson, who hails from Philadelphia, leads the Pack in scoring (13.0), three-point percentage (.636), steals (2.3) and assists (3.3) through the first three games of 2022-23. On her career, she averages 13.2 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.3 assists while shooting better than 40 percent overall (.447) and from distance (.408).
The Wooden Award committee will announce a midseason list and late season list before releasing the National Ballot of the top 15 players who will be voted upon by nearly 1,000 voters. The Wooden Award All-American Team will be announced the week of the Elite Eight, and the winner of the 2023 John R. Wooden Award will be presented in Los Angeles in April.
