Gill a Semifinalist for Campbell Trophy®

NFF Award honors nation’s top student-athlete
RALEIGH, N.C. - Graduate student Trenton Gill has been named a semifinalist for the 2021 William V. Campbell Trophy®. Presented annually by the National Football Foundation, the Campbell Trophy recognizes the country's top student-athlete based on academic success, football performance and exemplary community leadership.
Finalists for the award, which will be announced by the NFF on Oct. 27, will each will receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship as a member of the 2021 NFF Scholar-Athlete Class. One of the finalists will be named the winner of The William V. Campbell Trophy® during the 63rd NFF Annual Awards Dinner on Dec. 7 in Las Vegas, and his postgraduate scholarship will be increased to $25,000.
A Hillsborough native, Gill graduated in May with a degree in biological sciences and is now pursuing a postgraduate degree in professional communication. He was named to the 2020 All-ACC Academic team, has been a four-time ACC Honor Roll awardee. He won the NFF's Scholar-Athlete Award for the local Bill Dooley Chapter, and has been named to the Dean's List twice.
Gill holds the school career record for punting average with a 46.1 yard mark. A former walk-on who earned a scholarship, he was on the preseason watch list for the Ray Guy Award. He ranks eighth in school history in punting yards and was a preseason Walter Camp All-American in 2020.
In addition to his success on the field and in the classroom, Gill also has a heart for the community and was named to the 2020 AFCA Allstate Good Works Team In 2020 soon after students were sent home due to the pandemic, he saw a need in his hometown to help families and local business. He organized a fund raiser to purchase meals for those families in need from those local restaurants that were suffering from the shutdown. He ended up raising over $8,000, buying 1,000 meals and helping eight different restaurants.
In August of 2021, he organized another fundraiser to raise funds to purchase playground equipment for his former elementary school. He set a goal of $10,000 and ended up raising $12,000.
