TOKYO – Appearing in her third final of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Wolfpack breaststroker Sophie Hansson wrapped up action at the International meet by helping Sweden to a fifth-place finish in the women's 4x100-meter medley relay.
The squad set a new national record of 3:54.27, with Hansson's breaststroke leg of 1:05.67 moving her team as high as fourth in the early standings. Hansson also looked solid in the prelims of this event, with her 1:05.61 split pushing her team from sixth in its heat to second.
Hansson also finaled individually in the 100-meter breaststroke (sixth place) and also swam on Sweden's 4x100-meter freestyle relay team.
Saturday night marked the last session of swimming competition at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. In total, the Wolfpack had nine current, former and future swimmers in action over the last week. Among those performances, the members of the NC State squad earned six finals swims - the 4x100-meter mixed medley relay (Nyls Korstanje), the men's 100-meter butterfly (Noe Ponti), the women's 100-meter breaststroke (Hansson), the men's 4x200-meter freestyle relay (Ponti), the women's 4x100-meter freestyle relay (Hansson) and the women's medley relay.
Ponti's bronze medal in the 100-meter butterfly on Friday night marked the highest finish for the Pack at the 2020 Games. NC State has now had at least one medalist in each of the last four Olympic Games.
Following international competition, the Wolfpack will now turn its attention to the 2021-22 collegiate season. NC State's full slate will be released at a later date.
