Wilson Named to Preseason Bronko Nagurski Trophy Watch List

RALEIGH, N.C. -Â The Football Writers Association of America has announced that Wolfpack linebacker Payton Wilson has been named to the preseason watch list for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, given annually to the nation's top defender. It's the third preseason list Wilson has earned mention on for 2021, as he was named to the list for the Bednarik Award last week and to the Butkus Trophy watch list earlier this week.
The Hillsborough was a first-team All-ACC performer in 2020 on both the AP and the official league teams, leading the ACC in tackles per game with 10.8 - the first Wolfpack player to do so since 2000. He ranked fourth in the FBS in overall tackles, 13th in tackles per game, and was a three-time ACC Linebacker of the Week.
The Bronko Nagurski Trophy winner will be chosen from those five finalists and honored at the Bronko Nagurski Awards Banquet presented by LendingTree on Dec. 6 at the Charlotte Convention Center. The FWAA All-America Committee, after voting input from the association's full membership, selects a 26-man All-America Team and eventually the Nagurski Trophy finalists. Committee members, by individual ballot, select the winner they regard as the best defensive player in college football.
