TEMPE, Ariz. – The 2021 NC State women's tennis squad officially secured the best season-ending national ranking in the program's 44-year history as it was tabbed No. 6 in the final Oracle/ITA Division I Team Rankings of the year.
NC State finished 11th in 2019, which was a program-best at the time, and was also ranked fifth in the latest-released poll of 2020 before the season was halted. The Pack has proven itself as one of the quickest rising teams in collegiate tennis, and it has been featured in the national top 15 every week since Feb. 26, 2019.
The formal national ranking follows the Pack's deepest postseason run during which it reached the semifinals of the NCAA Championships. Prior to the 2021 dual match campaign, NC State had never advanced past the Round of 16, and the team impressed by becoming the sixth ACC women's tennis team in league history to reach the Final Four.
NC State compiled a 20-6 record, with those 20 victories ranking as the second-most in a single season in team history. The Pack, which earned the No. 6 seed at the NCAA Championships, spent the entire season ranked in the national top 15.
Half of the Wolfpack's wins were against nationally-ranked opponents, and four of those 10 wins came versus top-10 squads. Most notably, NC State defeated No. 3 Georgia in the NCAA Championships quarterfinals to match the highest-ranked win in program history.
Playing in the best and most competitive league in the nation, NC State finished the regular season in sole possession of third place in the ACC. It tied as its best conference finish in program history. A program-best three players were named All-ACC honorees, and four Pack players have earned All-America citations at the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships this week, also a program best.
NC State women's tennis was also ranked fourth in the final USTA Top 25 of the year.
