RALEIGH, N.C. - Joker Phillips, the Wolfpack's new assistant head coach/wide receivers coach, met virtually with the media on Wednesday for the first time.
Â
Phillips talked about his previous stints working with offensive coordinator Tim Beck and RB coach Kurt Roper and how those friendships and working relationships helped seal the decision to come to NC State. He also got some encouragement from former WR coach George McDonald, who was leaving to coach at his alma mater when Phillips was leaving from his interview.
Â
"Hearing from them about what is going on here and was enough for me," he said. "The things that Coach Doeren is doing here and what he's building here, the type of players we have in the [WR] room and the type of players we have on the team. I've been in this game a long time and you win with good kids who are good athletes. That's all I heard is what type of kids we have here."
Â
Another selling point was the group of wide receivers that will be under his tutelage. "It's a competition culture in my room," he continued. "We're deep in numbers: talented at the top end and have recruited some talent in the class that came in last year and three others who came in midyear. My expectation is that we continue that great wide receiver position."
Â
The coaching vet talked about the type of receiver he wants, using the acronym CATCH. "C – we want guys that are confident. We want guys that are accountable. Guys that are tough, guys that communicate and guys that are healthy – mentally and emotionally."
Â
Phillips said he is looking forward to recruiting for the Wolfpack as well. "We have an excellent head coach, excellent players, the ACC and a great institution. Those things will help me sell this place."
