RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State women's swimming and diving team opens postseason action this week as the Wolfpack competes at the 2021 Women's ACC Swimming and Diving Championships. The four-day meet is set to run Feb. 17-20 at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.
The event will also feature the men's diving events ahead of next week's men's ACC Championships meet.
Live video coverage of the event will be available on the ACC Network Extra. Streaming will begin at 11 a.m. each day, with coverage continuing to 8 p.m. on Wednesday and 10 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
MEET NOTEBOOK:
NC State's women have won four ACC team titles in the history of the conference meet. The Pack last took home first place as a team in 2019, the program's second title in a three-year span. It also won the meet in 2017 for the team's first league crown since 1980.
In 2020, the Wolfpack women won gold in seven events at the championship meet on the way to placing second as a team. It was the Pack's fourth straight top-three finish at the ACC Championships.
The Wolfpack owns titles in 106 individual and relay events since the inception of the conference meet in 1979. NC State's women also hold four meet records heading into this season's competition. Last season, Katharine Berkoff, Sophie Hansson, Kylee Alons and Kylee Perry set the ACC Championships record in the 400-yard medley relay with a winning time of 3:27.22, and Hansson bettered her meet and conference record in the 100-yard breaststroke (57.74).
NC State has seen its women win back-to-back titles in six events – the 100-yard backstroke (in which it has a four-year winning streak), the 200-yard backstroke, the 100-yard breaststroke, the 200-yard breaststroke, the 400-yard individual medley and the 400-yard medley relay.
2020-21 IN REVIEW:
The Wolfpack women head into the postseason with a 4-1 record in head-to-head matchups, and they also won invitational action at the end of the fall semester. NC State's only loss during the 2020-21 regular season came at the hands of ACC foe Virginia in a dual meet that came down to the final relay.
NC State picked up wins over three opponents that were ranked at the time of competition, beating No. 18 UNC twice and adding wins against No. 16 Duke, and No. 14 Virginia Tech.
The Pack has been ranked in the top 11 of the CSCAA/TYR Top 25 for the entirety of the season, checking in as high as No. 4 in the month of January. They are currently ranked 11th nationally headed into the postseason.
SUCCESS UNDER HOLLOWAY:
Since Braden Holloway took over as head coach at the start of the 2011-12 season, the Wolfpack has enjoyed unparalleled success in the pool.
During the 2010-11 season, NC State placed eighth at the ACC Championships and scored zero points at the NCAA Championships. Since then, NC State's women have secured four straight top-three finishes at the ACC Championships, including winning the conference crown in 2017 and 2019. The Wolfpack women have also finished inside the top 20 at the NCAA Championships for five seasons in a row and earned a program-best No. 7 national finish in both 2017 and 2019.
THE PACK IS BACK:
The Wolfpack women's squad returns its top four scorers from last year's second-place ACC Championship team - Alons (87 points), Kate Moore (87 points), Hansson (84 points) and Emma Muzzy (81 points).
Each of the five women's swimmers that won an individual ACC title in 2020 is back with the Wolfpack for this season.
TOP ACC MARKS:
NC State enters the ACC Championships with top-seeded swimmers in both backstroke events and the top-seeded relay teams in the 200-yard and 800-yard freestyle relays.
Berkoff (50.40) and Alons (51.81) are the conference's top two 100-backstroke swimmers, with Berkoff's time checking in as an NCAA A cut.
She also enters the meet with the best 200-yard backstroke time this season, a 1:50.20 A cut that she clocked during invitational action in December.
The 50-yard freestyle might prove to be a tight race and a big chance for the Pack to rack up points. Virginia's Kate Douglass (21.42r) owns the ACC's fastest time coming into the week, but the second, third, fourth and fifth seeds belong to NC State's Alons (21.90), Berkoff (22.25r), Victoria Fonville (22.35) and Sirena Rowe (22.37).
The Pack also leads the way with the fastest 200-yard freestyle (1:27.00) and 800-yard freestyle (7:01.55) entry marks.
