Abu Dhabi, UAE – Sophie Hansson and Ryan Held added to their list of accomplishments at the FINA World Championships as both swimmers put together medal performances and set national records during Monday morning's finals session.
Appearing in her second final in as many individual events competed in at the meet, Hansson lowered her Swedish national record in the 100-meter breaststroke to 1:03.50 to claim a second-place finish. She touched just 0.03 seconds behind the winning time and earned her second individual and fourth overall medal.
NC State alumnus Held kicked off the Wolfpack's Monday in the pool by claiming yet another record with the United States. He anchored the 4x50-meter medley relay in 20.52 to help lead his team to a tie for gold with a 1:30.51 mark that set a new championship and American best.
The relay field was packed with NC State representation, as Kacper Stokowski led off Poland's sixth-place squad with a split of 23.48 and alumnus Simonas Bilis anchored Lithuania's eighth-place relay with a 21.07 split.
Just minutes after competing in the relay for Team USA, Held raced in the 100-meter freestyle semifinal where he earned another individual finals appearance. He clocked in at 46.36 to rank fourth out of the session, and he will compete for a medal on Tuesday.
Nyls Korstanje placed sixth in the 50-meter butterfly after an impressive set of swims in the event. He touched in 22.39 in the final, his best time of the meet.
Andreas Vazaios was also in action on Monday, wrapping up his slate of individual events in the 400-meter individual medley. The Athens, Greece, native just narrowly missed finaling in the race, placing ninth in the prelims with a time of 4:09.53.
Tuesday marks the final day of action at the 2021 World Championships. Prelims begin at 12:30 a.m. EST, and the last finals session will take place beginning at 9 a.m. EST with coverage of both provided by NBC. Hunter Tapp (200 backstroke) and Hansson (200 breaststroke) will look for finals spots in their last individual events of the meet, and Held (100 freestyle) has already booked a spot in that final.
