Live Scoring
RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State men's golf team won the Mountaineer Invitational held at the Pete Dye Golf Club in Bridgeport, W. Va., on Tuesday with a team score of nine-under par.
After starting the season with a second-place finish in the 14-team Rod Myers Invitational in September, NC State claimed the tournament title in its second competition of the fall.
The tournament title is the ninth for NC State since the fall of 2017 when Press McPhaul took over the program. NC State has now won at least one tournament every season McPhaul has been head coach.
It's the fifth win in the 2021 calendar year for the Pack. NC State won four tournaments in the spring of 2021, despite losing two seniors from the spring roster, the Pack has quickly gotten back to its winning ways.
The Pack held a two-shot lead on Penn State after two rounds of play, but it was tournament-host West Virginia, that started the day 11 shots back of NC State, that put up the biggest challenge to the Pack. The Mountaineers roared back into contention with a team score of 275 on Tuesday to finish one shot back of NC State for second place.
The Pack has a two-shot lead on Penn State for first, while tournament-host West Virginia is nine shots back of Penn State and 11 shots behind NC State in third place.
Graduate transfer Tim Bunten, in his one and only season with the Pack, led NC State on Tuesday as the Concord, N.C., native shot a five-under par 67. Bunten finished in a tie for fourth place with a 54-hole score of five-under par.
Bunten has finished in the top-10 of both tournaments this fall.
Maximilian Steinlechner was next for the Pack in a tie for eighth place. Steinlechner paced the Pack on day one with a score of four-under par but shot a 73 on Tuesday to finish in a tie for eighth place at three-under par for the tourney.
Like Bunten, Steinlechner has also finished in the top-10 in both of NC State's tournaments this fall.
Easton Paxton was next for the Pack in a tie for 11th place. The Riverton, Wyo., native shot even par on Tuesday and finished with a 54-hole score of one-under par.
Spencer Oxendine and Brandon Einstein rounded out the Pack lineup in a tie for 18th place. Oxendine shot a one-over par 73 in all three rounds, while Einstein had even-par rounds of 72 in the first and second round before a three-over 75 on Tuesday.
Playing as an individual, Ethan Choi had the finest collegiate performance of his young career as the sophomore finished in a tie for sixth place at four-under par. Choi had a 54-hole scorecard of 70-73-69. Jake Herring, also competing as an individual finished in 17th place at two-over par.
NC State returns to action Sunday when it begins play at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate in Jonesborough, Tenn.
