Pack Charts Slew of Wins on First Day of ITA Carolina Regional

CARY, N.C. - Members of the NC State men's tennis team opened competition at the ITA Carolina Regional on Friday, competing in singles and collecting 14 total wins.
Eight members of the Wolfpack won their first-round matches, moving on to the afternoon's round of 64, and three of those who competed in the second round moved on to the third.
Fons Van Sambeek claimed the first victory of the day for NC State, sweeping Josiah Schainblatt of The Citadel 6-0, 6-0. He was followed in the win by Braden Shick, who took down Charlotte's Luke Thomson 6-2, 6-0. Shick went on to win his second-round matchup against Mark Endler (Western Carolina) 6-3, 6-0/
Martins Rocens and Joseph Wayand recorded wins in the first round as well with Rocens defeating Daniel Ozernoy (UNCW) 7-5, 6-0 and Wayand taking down Furman's Drew Singerman 6-0, 6-1.
Luca Staeheli competed against SCSU's Luka Stefanovic, coming away with the 6-1, 6-2 victory, and the sophomore posted a second-round 7-5, 7-5 win over Charlotte's Coy Simon. Junior Robin Catry posted a 6-3, 6-2 win over Vasil Ivanov of NC A&T before taking down Campbell's Leon Petko 6-3, 6-2 to secure a third-round berth.
Rounding out the first-round singles wins on the day were Damien Salvestre and Collin Shick's victories. Salvestre tabbed a quick 6-1, 6-0 win over UNCW's Ignacio Sandoval to move to the second round while Shick got his win over Alex Horn of Western Carolina by a score of 6-2, 6-2.
Salvestre claimed victory in the third round as well, defeating College of Charleston's Matias Gaedechens soundly in a 6-0, 6-1 decision.
In the consolation bracket, both Yannai Barkai and Joseph Schrader recorded wins. Barkai posted a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Roger Rogowski (UNCG) and Schrader tabbed a 6-2, 3-6, 1-0(6) win against Juan Camilo Gongora of Davidson.
