
Pack Falls Late to Syracuse, 76-73

Junior forward Jericole Hellems led the Pack with a career-high 24 points
SYRACUSE, N.Y.- The NC State men's basketball team fell to Syracuse, 76-73, Sunday night inside of the Carrier Dome.
With the loss, NC State falls to 7-6, 3-5 in the ACC, while Syracuse improves to 10-5, 4-4 in the ACC.
Junior forward Jericole Hellems led the Pack with a career-high 24 points and contributed 10 rebounds for his first career double-double. Playing out of the high-post against the Syracuse vaunted 2-3 zone, the Saint Louis, Mo., native added four assists while attempting a career-high 19 shots. Hellems also was 6-of-7 from the free throw line.
Redshirt sophomore forward Manny Bates recorded his second career double-double with 17 points and a career-high of 14 rebounds. The 14 rebounds are the most for NC State since Torin Dorn had 17 against UMKC on Dec. 9, 2017.
Senior guard Braxton Beverly also reached double figures with 11 points.
Redshirt freshman guard Dereon Seabron also had a career-high nine points off the bench.
NC State started off hot offensively in the first half with every player on the floor putting up points. Bates recorded 12 points in the first half on a perfect 5-of-5 shooting in the opening 20 minutes.
A late run gave the Pack a nine-point lead, 47-38, at the break.
Syracuse opened the second half by cutting into the Pack's lead and the game settled into a close affair for the remainder of the game. A jumper from Syracuse freshman guard Kadary Richmond put Syracuse up 67-65 at the 5:02 mark and the Orange would never trail again.
Junior forward Alan Griffin led Syracuse with 19 points, while Buddy Boeheim added 17 points.
Redshirt junior guard Thomas Allen made three free throws to cut Syracuse's lead to one with six seconds left on the clock. However, Syracuse made both free throws after an NC State foul and the Pack's last second three-point attempt was off.
NC State returns to action Wednesday night to host Virginia at PNC Arena. Tipoff is set for 9 p.m. and the game will be televised on the ACC Network.
