Four women honored as 2020 ITA Scholar Athletes
TEMPE, Ariz. – The NC State women's tennis team was named an Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Academic Team for the 2019-20 season, as announced by the organization on Monday morning.
The team found unprecedented success in the classroom this past spring, posting the highest semester GPA among all Wolfpack teams with a 3.83 mark. That number is also the highest every among any sport in NC State's history since the department began tracking in the fall of 2008.
In addition to the team recognition, four members of the Wolfpack squad were named 2020 ITA Scholar Athletes. Dylan Cannon, Jaeda Daniel, Marta Gonzalez-Ballbe and Lana Mavor were all honored for the first time in their careers.
All four players were named to the Dean's List for the most recent term, and both Cannon and Gonzalez-Ballbe turned in perfect 4.0 semester GPAs. NC State has now had at least one player named an ITA Scholar Athlete in each of the last five seasons.
On the court, the Pack never wavered outside of the top 10 during the 2020 campaign. After its appearance at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships in early February, NC State was a fixture in the national top five and soared as high as a program-best No. 3.
Though the 2020 dual match campaign was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Pack was off to its best start in program history for the second year in a row with an 18-3 record. Five of the squad's victories were over top-25 opponents, including a historic upset over No. 3 Georgia for the Wolfpack's highest-ranked win in program history.
To become an ITA Scholar Athlete, one must have a grade point average of at least 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale) for the current academic year and have been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters (including freshman through senior year). Programs that were recognized as ITA All-Academic Teams must have posted a team GPA of at least 3.2 (on a 4.0 scale).
