Zanti Named Semifinalist for Arthur Ashe Jr. Sport Scholar Award

FAIRFAX, VA. – NC State rifle senior Claire Zanti has been named a semifinalist for the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sport Scholar award, as announced by Diverse: Issues in High Education on Tuesday, March 31.
The award recognizes outstanding minority young men and women who have distinguished themselves in their academic and athletic pursuits.
Zanti was an important part of the NC State rifle team this season, competing in 12 of the team's 14 meets, including the NCAA Qualifier and the GARC Championships. Zanti posted a career-high 589 in air rifle on senior day against #7 Nebraska. Throughout the 2019-20 season, Zanti helped NC State rifle record five of the top ten scores in program history, in addition to achieving a No. 7 ranking, the highest ever for the program. The team concluded the season ranked 13th.
Following her sophomore year, Zanti was named the 2018 Arthur Ashe Jr. Rifle Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year in addition to being a four-time CRCA Scholastic All-American. The senior is a double major in Biological Sciences and Animal Science with a cumulative GPA of 3.76. She has been named to the Dean's List every semester at NC State and is also a member of the undergraduate honors program and the University Scholars program.
Zanti has been incredibly involved in the community, volunteering over 200 hours as a licensed wildlife rehabilitator for the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. On campus, Zanti has volunteered with the Be the Match Bone Marrow registry, Wolfpack Blitz Reading Day, Student-Athlete Orientation and the NC State Veterinary School Turtle Rescue Team. Additionally, Zanti serves as secretary for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
In addition to their athletic ability, the students named 2020 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars are students of color who have maintained a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.5, are at least a sophomore academically, and have been active on their campuses or in their communities. Of the close to 1,000 scholar-athletes nominated, one male and one female athlete will be selected as Sports Scholar of the Year.
Past Ashe scholars include: Baylor's Robert Griffin III (2011); Tennessee's Kara Lawson (2003); San Diego State's Marshall Faulk (1993), and Stanford University's Simone Manuel (2017). The 2020 Arthur Ashe, Jr Sports Scholar of the Year finalists and winners will be announced soon.
