LOS ANGELES – NC State women's basketball sophomore Elissa Cunane has been named to the John R. Wooden Award Late Season Top 20 Watch List, as announced by the Los Angeles Athletic Club on Monday evening.
Chosen based on performances up to this point in the 2019-20 campaign, the list is made up of student-athletes who are front-runners for the sport's most prestigious honor that recognizes the Player of the Year. Cunane made her debut on the Midseason Top 25 in early January before becoming one of the 20 players named to the Late Season list.
The Wolfpack center is just one of two players in the ACC averaging a double-double on the season with 17.0 points and 10.3 rebounds per game. Her rebounding average and field-goal percentage (.598) both pace the league, and she is also tied for the conference lead in number of double-double games (11).
Cunane's numbers also rank among the best at the national level, as she owns top-25 marks in double-doubles posted, defensive rebounds per game (7.3), field-goal percentage and rebounds per game.
The Summerfield, N.C., native put together a streak of four-straight double-double performances from Nov. 30 (vs. Hawaii) through Dec. 15 (vs. Elon). Cunane has scored 20+ points in a total of nine outings, including six of 11 ACC matchups, and has scored in double figures in all but four games this season.
She has been named ACC Player of the Week on two occasions this season and was the Citizen Naismith Trophy Player of the Week on Jan. 7. Cunane also began the 2019-20 season as one of 20 players on the watch list for the 2020 Lisa Leslie Award, which honors the top center in women's college basketball.
A final National Ballot of 15 players will be released to nearly 1,000 voters prior to the start of the NCAA Tournament, and the Wooden Award All-American Team will be announced during the week of the Elite Eight. The winner of the 2020 John R. Wooden Award will be presented during the ESPN College Basketball Awards on Friday, April 10.
