First Day in Full Pads Brings the Hits to #PackCamp

RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State football donned full pads and went live for the first time during 2019 #PackCamp on Tuesday morning. Practice number five ended with a few periods of scrimmaging with live tackling.Â
Â
"Today we were able to tackle a little bit," said head coach Dave Doeren. "The last few plays for each group we got some live work. It is good to see guys finish plays. It was fun to see guys hit, and guys tackle. There was a lot of straining going on, especially when you are in those short-yardage drills."
Â
Many questions asked during the media availability following practice were regarding who the starters will be at the key positions as the first week of camp winds down.Â
Â
One such position, the wide receivers, lost a pair of 1,000-yard receivers to the NFL (Jakobi Meyers to the Patriots and Kelvin Harmon to the Redskins) but Doeren is very comfortable about the corps that returns.
Â
"We have good depth there," said Doeren. "We have C.J. (Riley), Emeka (Emezie) and Thayer (Thomas) there from last year, and now Tabari (Hines), Max Fisher, Keyone (Lesane), and Devin Carter - all guys we feel like can play. There are other guys that are working out there as well."
Â
Emezie returns the most experience from last year, 53 catches for 616 yards and five TDs, and is looked upon as a leader for the group going into his junior season.
Â
"He is quiet in his leadership role, but he is so respected because of his work ethic and what he stands for and how important things are to him," said Doeren.
Â
One unique aspect of the Wolfpack for 2019 is that three sets of brothers are on the squad.
Â
"It is pretty cool to look out there and see those brothers walking off the field together," said Doeren. "You have Thayer and Drake (Thomas), the Dabbs brothers (Tyler and Will), and the McKay (Matthew and Timothy) brothers. That is pretty special. It says a lot about your program when an older brother comes and has a good experience and the parents want the younger one to follow them. It says a lot about our culture and how we treat these young men.Â
"It is fun to see them together. For life they will have that experience of being brothers on the same football team in college."
Â
NC State will return to the practice field on Thursday.
