
NC State Advances to Second Round of #NCAAWTennis Championships, Defeats VCU 4-1

The Pack Takes on Tennessee at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center on Sunday at 2 p.m.
RALEIGH – The No. 12 NC State women's tennis team defeated VCU 4-1 at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center Saturday afternoon, advancing to the second round of the NCAA Championships for the fourth time in program history and for the second time under head coach Simon Earnshaw.
Senior Amanda Rebol clinched the match for the Pack with an energizing six-game sweep in the third set.
On court one, No. 7 Anna Rogers and Alana Smith won their fourth consecutive doubles match. Trailing 2-0 early, the duo stormed back to take the lead 4-3, and eventually took the match 6-3.
Adriana Reami and Claudia Wiktorin followed up the court one victory with a dominant 6-2 win over Paolo Exposito Diaz-Delgado and Melissa Ifidzhen to give the Pack the 1-0 advantage heading into singles play. NC State has taken the doubles point in its past three matches.
Bianca Moldovan put the Pack on the board in singles play with a dominant straight-set victory over Noumea Witmus. Her 6-0, 6-1 decision pushed NC State ahead, 2-0.
Freshman Alana Smith handed Anna Rasmussen an impressive 6-1, 6-4 defeat on court two to turn the attention to courts three, four, and six as the match point stood up for grabs for the Pack.
The Fort Washington, Md., native tallied her team-leading 31st singles win of the 2019 campaign.
Battles ensued on the three remaining courts. Reami held strong in a second-set tiebreaker to force a third set while Norman grinded back into the third set, taking a 5-4 lead after trailing 4-1 early. Their matches on courts three and four would be halted after NC State took its fourth point on the day.
Amanda Rebol clinched the match for the Pack, rattling off six straight games in the third set to shutout Ifidzhen to punch NC State's ticket to the second round.
