RALEIGH – Jaeda Daniel has signed a financial aid agreement to join the NC State women's tennis program, as announced on Friday by head coach Simon Earnshaw.
Daniel comes to Raleigh after two seasons at Auburn, earning First Team All-SEC honors in the 2018 campaign. The 2018 ITA Southern Region Player to Watch, she earned a career-high No. 39 ranking in April of 2018 and tied that ranking in the fall of 2018.
The Newtown Square, Pa., native concluded her freshman season ranked No. 61 in the final edition of the Oracle/ITA Division I Singles rankings after taking down four ranked singles opponents. In her freshman campaign, she collected impressive wins over Estela Perez-Somarriba of Miami (currently ranked No. 1 in singles) and Hadley Berg of South Carolina (ranked No. 31 at the time). Daniel was also named SEC Freshman of the Week.
In Daniel's sophomore season, she added a top-25 win over Katarina Stresnakova (Oklahoma State) and a win over Felicity Maltby (Texas Tech), who is currently ranked 22nd in the nation, to her resume. The win over Maltby kicked off a 2-0 start to the season with wins over two top-50 opponents (Natalie Novotna, Virginia Tech).
She currently stands at No. 90 in the Oracle/ITA Division I Rankings.
Playing the 2019 season exclusively on court one, and seeing time in both the No. 1 and No. 2 positions in 2018, Daniel has compiled a 38-31 career singles record. She also boasts a 37-17 career doubles record, going 16-6 this past spring in dual match play.
"The difficult decision to leave Auburn University was made easier by the people at NC State," said Daniel. "The support and understanding of the process made the transition smooth, as did the determination to make me better as a player. The long-term goals and work ethic of the coaches, players, and staff align with my own, and I am very excited to be a part of the Pack!"
Off the court, Daniel has excelled in the classroom as she was named to the Athletic Director Honor Roll, requiring a 3.5 GPA or higher, in her first two academic years.
Daniel is an Easter Bowl (singles) and Les Petite Champion (doubles) Champion and has reached a WTA Professional ranking of No. 615 in singles. Entering college, she maintained a top-20 ranking over the course of her junior career and was a blue chip recruit ranked as high as No. 8 in the 2017 class.
"In my communication with Jaeda, it was instantly obvious what an incredible all-around person she is. Her goals both on and off the court aligned perfectly with the program culture we are building at NC State," said Earnshaw. "David and I couldn't be more excited by Jaeda's approach and how serious she is about her tennis and post-college ambition. My expectation is that the impact Jaeda will have on WPN will be immediate, and we're ready to get to work this summer. Go Pack!"
The daughter of Chevaughn and MhyrlitoDaniel, she has two siblings, Jeannez and Jeovaughni. Jeannez played collegiate tennis at Appalachian State. Outside of tennis, she enjoys puzzles, music, and sports-- particularly football, baseball, and track and field.
