INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – No. 12 NC State women's tennis will be represented by Anna Rogers and Alana Smith at the 2019 NCAA Women's Tennis Singles and Doubles Championships as the duo received at-large bids to compete in the doubles draw and Rogers also earned a selection to the singles draw. Based on the seeding of the tournament, Rogers and Smith will become the first All-Americans in program history.
NC State has been represented in singles and doubles in the same season only once before 2019, as Sanaa Bhambri qualified in singles and was joined in the doubles draw by Sandhya Nagaraj (2011).
Rogers is a top-16 seed in singles, and Rogers and Smith are a top-eight seed in doubles. Both of those qualifications automatically garner All-American status.
Rogers, currently ranked ninth in singles, will be a part of a field of 64 singles players that are set to compete in the single-elimination tournament. Her singles bid is the seventh in the history of the program and the first since Martina Frantova in 2016.
Earlier this season, Rogers reached a program-best No. 8 singles ranking. Named to the All-ACC First Team, the junior earned all-conference status for the third consecutive season. Playing on court one, Rogers (29-13) has collected 16 ranked wins, including a victory over second-ranked Estela Perez-Sommariba of Miami (Fla). She also boasts a stretch in which she went on an 11-match winning streak that required victories over six ranked opponents.
In doubles, 32 teams are set to participate. Competing on court one together during the 2019 campaign, Rogers and Smith have combined for 30 wins this season and boast a 30-5 record together. Tallying 12 ranked doubles victories, they have defeated two top-five opponents (No. 4 Leduc/Navarro – Clemson, No. 5 Koch/Khmelnitckaia – Kansas).
The announcement marks Rogers' third consecutive doubles selection. The junior has advanced to the Sweet 16 in her first two seasons of competition. In 2018, she became the first NC State player to be a two-time participant in the NCAA Doubles Championship.
The singles and doubles championships will be played at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla., from May 20-25 following the conclusion of the team championships on May 19. NC State opens action at the team championships on May 4 against VCU at 4 p.m., hosting the tournament first and second rounds for the first time in school history at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.
