
Pack Pulls Away in Second Half to Defeat Appalachian State, 72-60

NC State held the Mountaineers without a field goal over a six-minute stretch in final 10 minutes
RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State men's basketball team went on a pivotal 12-1 run over a four-minute stretch late in the second half to pull away from Appalachian State and win, 72-60, on Sunday afternoon at PNC Arena.
With the win, NC State improves to 10-3 on the season, while Appalachian State falls to 8-5.
NC State lead early in the second half was as high as 11 points, but Appalachian State battled back, pulling within two points, 50-48, on a James Lewis Jr., basket with 9:18 to play.
The Pack responded with a game-breaking 12-1 run over the next three-and-a-half minutes to pull away from the Mountaineers for good.
Manny Bates had back-to-back baskets to give NC State an eight-point lead, D.J. Funderburk made a double-digit lead with a short jumper and after an Appalachian State free throw, Devon Daniels buried a three-pointer in the corner to give NC State a 61-49 lead with 5:38 to go.
Appalachian State would go over six minutes without a field goal during the final 10 minutes, finally breaking its drought with a lay-up with 2:55 to play.
The Mountaineers could never get closer than nine points the rest of the way.
Funderburk led the Pack with a career-high 22 points and a career-high nine rebounds. The Cleveland, Ohio native finished the game 10-of-14 from the field.
Daniels and Johnson both added double-doubles. Daniels finished with 18 points, a career-high tying 11 rebounds and a season-best four steals, while Johnson had his third consecutive double-double with 12 points and a career-high 11 rebounds. Johnson added six assists.
Bates finished with a career-high nine points and added five blocks.
NC State finished the game +19 in rebounding as the Pack grabbed a season-best 53 rebounds, including 17 on the offensive end. The Pack finished with a 22-10 second chance points advantage.
The Pack played without its leading scorer and rebounder on the season, C.J. Bryce, after the senior guard was injured in the team's shootaround on Sunday morning.
Justin Forrest led Appalachian State with 25 points.
NC State returns to ACC play next Saturday when it plays at Clemson. The game is scheduled for a noon tipoff and will be shown on the ACC Network.
