NC State cut deficit to three in final minutes after trailing by 20 points early in second half
BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The NC State men's basketball team fell to No. 16 Memphis, 83-78, on Thursday at the Barclays Center Classic.
With the loss, NC State falls to 5-2 on the season, while Memphis improves to 6-1.
The Pack trailed by 20 points with 17:27 remaining in the game, but went on an 11-2 run, capped by a Markell Johnson jumper with 11:47 to go to pull within 63-52.
Memphis led 74-64 after a Booger Ellis three-point play with 7:01 remaining, when the Pack responded with a 7-0 run to make it a one possession game with 4:31 to go.
NC State could never get closer than three the rest of the way though as Memphis hit enough free throws to keep the Pack at bay.
Johnson finished with a game-high 22 points on 9-of-17 shooting and also led the Pack with six assists and three steals. He also tied for team-high honors with five rebounds.
Sophomore forward Jericole Hellems scored a career-high 17 points on 5-of-11 shooting and added four rebounds and one steal.
D.J. Funderburk was the third NC State player in double figures with 14 points off-the-bench.
Memphis took a 55-39 lead into halftime after shooting 63.3% from the field and only turning the ball over three times in the first 20 minutes. The Pack turned up the defensive pressure in the second half, forcing the Tigers into 12 turnovers and limiting Memphis to just 43.3% shooting.
The Pack was outrebounded by 13 on Thursday, the biggest rebounding deficit it has had this season.
The Tigers also finished the game 8-of-12 from three-point range. The 66.7 percent three-point shooting was the best an NC State opponent has shot from long distance in the Kevin Keatts era.
