RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State men's tennis team will be in action close to home this weekend as it plays at the ITA Carolina Regional at the Cary Tennis Park. The tournament begins Friday, Oct. 18 and runs through Tuesday, Oct. 22. Admission is free to the public.
The regional marks the final tournament of the season through which the Wolfpack's players can earn automatic berths to the 2019 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships. The fall season finale is set for Nov. 6-10 in Newport Beach, Calif., and the regional doubles champions and regional singles finalists will automatically qualify.
LAST TIME OUT:
The Wolfpack last competed at the ITA All-American Championships, highlighted by a run to the doubles main draw by Tadas Babelis and Yannai Barkai.
The pair's first two qualifying draw contests went into super tiebreakers for the third sets. Babelis and Barkai then managed to defeat 30th-ranked Oscar Cutting and David Stevenson (Memphis) in straight sets to book their spot in the main draw of the national tournament.
After winning three-straight matches, Babelis and Barkai fell in the first round of the main draw to No. 22 Jake Fearnley and Alastair Gray of TCU. The NC State duo has compiled an impressive 8-2 doubles mark to start the season, highlighted by three victories over nationally-ranked foes.
2018 REGIONAL REWIND:
At the 2018 ITA Carolina Regional, NC State saw two doubles pairs reach the round of 16. Then seniors Igor Saveljic and Ivan Saveljic advanced to the doubles semifinal at the tournament, marking the second season in a row that the Wolfpack had a pair reach the semifinal round of the regional championship.
FALL TITLES:
Babelis and Barkai were crowned doubles champions at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic on Sept. 23 as they opened their 2019-20 campaigns. The duo posted a 5-0 record at the tournament and took down two nationally-ranked opponents over the final two rounds of action on the way to claiming the doubles title.
Joseph Schrader also has a tournament win under his belt this season. The redshirt sophomore took home the singles title from the black draw of the Duke Bonk Invitational in September after going a perfect 4-0 at the tournament.
