Franken Named ACC Men’s Golf Scholar-Athlete of the Year

RALEIGH – NC State men's golf junior Stephen Franken has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Golf Scholar-Athlete of the Year the league office announced Thursday.
Franken headlined the All-ACC Academic team and was joined on the team by teammates Justin Hood and Harrison Rhoades. It is the second All-ACC Academic team honor for Franken and Rhoades and the first for Hood.
A junior studying business administration, Franken was named the 2017-18 ACC Men's Golf Player of the Year. He finished the season with a 70.56 stroke average, the second-lowest in program history, and posted eight top-10 and six top-5 finishes in 12 tournaments this year.
Franken, who led the Wolfpack to its first NCAA Championship appearances since 2011, ranked No. 20 in the nation according to Golfweek and No. 27 according to Golfstat in the postseason rankings.
The Scholar-Athlete of the Year award is named after Rod Myers, Duke's men's golf coach from 1973-2007.
Hood had a stroke average of 73.0 this season and played nine rounds at par or lower. He had his top performance of the season in the final regular season competition with a tie for fifth place at the Stitch Intercollegiate.
Rhoades had a stroke average of 73.38 this season and played 12 rounds at par or lower. Last weekend, Rhoades won the North Carolina Amateur Championship.
