WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - NC State men's tennis sophomore Alexis Galarneau battled back from a set down but ultimately fell 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 to UC Santa Barbara's Nicolas Moreno de Alboran in the first round of the NCAA Singles Championships Wednesday evening.
"I'm proud of Alexis for the work that he put in to reach the tournament and for playing hard in this match and all year despite fighting an injury for much of the season," said head coach Kyle Spencer. "He fought gallantly today, and I'm incredibly proud of him. Congrats to Nicolas (Moreno de Alboran). I'm looking forward to seeing Alexis have a fantastic summer."
Galarneau, who is currently ranked No. 43 in the nation, managed to fight back to win the second set after dropping the first to No. 67 Moreno de Alboran. In the second set, Galarneau broke Moreno de Alboran's serve three times, including back-to-back breaks to close out the set.
The two traded breaks to open the third set and then held the next four service games, but Moreno de Alboran managed to take a 4-3 lead and went on to take the third set and the match. He will advance to take on the nation's top-ranked player Martin Redlicki of UCLA in the second round.
The loss brought Galarneau's second season with the Wolfpack to a close. He ended his sophomore campaign with 10 of his 14 wins on the year coming against ranked opponents and was named to the First Team All-ACC for the first time in his career.
The final set of individual rankings will be released on May 30 after the conclusion of the NCAA Championships singles and doubles draws.
As announced earlier Wednesday afternoon, NC State finished the 2017-18 season ranked No. 29 in the final Oracle/ITA standings. It is the team's best finish since 2014 and the third-highest ranking in program history.
