RALEIGH, N.C. – Next week, NC State men's tennis sophomore Alexis Galarneau will continue his season as he makes his first career appearance in the NCAA Men's Tennis Singles Championships. He is the first Wolfpack player since 2016 to be selected to compete in the tournament, which will mark the end of the 2017-18 men's tennis season.
Since joining the program in the fall of 2016, Galarneau has made an impact at the top of NC State's singles lineup. The Laval, Canada native has tallied 16 career wins over ranked opponents to date, primarily playing at the No. 1 singles spot during dual match competition.
Galarneau heads to the NCAA Singles Championships to conclude a record-breaking sophomore year, during which he achieved a program and career-high No. 16 singles ranking twice over the course of the 2017-18 season. He began the year by making program history in the fall, becoming the first NC State men's tennis player to reach the quarterfinals at the ITA All-American Championships. On his way to advancing past the Round of 16, Galarneau defeated Georgia's No. 21 Wayne Montgomery in the first round, marking the highest-ranked opponent that he has beaten in his time at NC State.
He remained ranked in the top 50 during the entirety of the season and enters singles competition at the NCAA Championships ranked No. 45. He took down seven ranked opponents in the spring, and he picked up impressive victories against Duke's No. 25 Nicolas Alvarez in straight sets and against Minnesota's No. 35 Stefan Milicevic to clinch the Wolfpack's second-straight early-season victory over a Power Five program. At the conclusion of conference play, Galarneau garnered First Team All-ACC honors.
Galarneau also saw tremendous success during his freshman campaign. He posted a 25-10 mark in singles play during the 2016-17 season, with six wins over ranked opponents. His biggest singles win of the season came in a 6-1, 6-4 win over No. 30 Lukas Finzelberg of No. 12 Oklahoma State in 2017. His accomplishments throughout his first year with the Wolfpack earned him a spot on the Second Team All-ACC in his first year with the Wolfpack.
Wake Forest will serve as the host for the remainder of the team championships and the individual championships. The singles championships will be played in Winston-Salem, N.C. at the Wake Forest Tennis Center from May 23-28.
