CARY, N.C. - The NC State men's tennis team (17-7) defeated Miami in a 4-1 victory Thursday evening to open competition at the 2018 ACC Championships at the Cary Tennis Park.
The Wolfpack will move on to face the tournament's No. 2 seed and national No. 6 UNC-Chapel Hill in the quarterfinal round of the ACC Championships. The match is scheduled to be played at 5 p.m. Friday.
"Credit to Miami," said head Coach Kyle Spencer. "They gave us a fight. We knew they would, but our guys have been so tough all year. They've been so clutch all year, and I had no doubt that we were going to be able to win today."
NC State brought tremendous energy into its second-round match and jumped out to a quick start by claiming the doubles point over Miami.
Igor Saveljic and Ivan Saveljic put together a dominant performance on court one against the nation's 22nd-ranked duo of Christian Langmo and Adria Soriano. The brothers dropped just one game on the way to taking down the Miami pair by a 6-1 score.
On court two, Alexis Galarneau and Michael Ogden, who are ranked 50th in the nation as a pair, broke to go up 2-1. They used the break to hold an advantage over Miami's Dane Dunlap and Bojan Jankulovski for the remainder of their match. With Ogden serving, Galarneau ended the match with an incredible tweener lob to give NC State the doubles point in emphatic fashion.

"Credit at one, and credit at two for just jumping on the guys early," said Spencer. "I thought Ivan and Igor did such a good job of setting the tone and putting some breaks out there for us, and then Michael and Alexis picked up a break and just held it all the way through, and Michael did a great job of serving out the match."
In singles, Galarneau was the first to tally a victory for the Wolfpack, taking on No. 67 Soriano. The Wolfpack sophomore took a one-set lead, breaking Soriano to take the first set 7-5. He quickly won the first three games of the second set, which he capped off with an ace to win it 6-3.
"What a stellar job Alexis did," said Spencer. "He comes out in front of a big crowd and takes care of business in straight sets. That's a great result."
The Hurricanes drew within one, picking up their only point of the match as Langmo defeated Babelis 6-3, 7-6 (5) on court two.
All of the remaining courts saw third sets, but the Wolfpack managed to show tremendous poise on the way to earning its final two singles wins.
Robert Turzak put NC State a match away from the clinch, beating Miami's Tatsuki Shimamoto. Though Shimamoto forced a third set, Turzak cruised through the final frame to complete a 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 win.
"Robo got off to a really good start and was able to kind of close out the first set," said Spencer. "His opponent played really well in the second set, and then Robo just weathered the storm and played a dominant third set."
The match clincher came from Ivan on court four. The Wolfpack junior came back from a set down and picked up his team-leading 21st win of the 2017-18 season, defeating Dunlap 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.

"All year, Ivan has been our guy that's been clinching matches," said Spencer. "I'm just so proud of him and his determination to not let some little things get to him, and he did a really good job."
The Wolfpack returns to action at the Cary Tennis Park tomorrow evening as it makes its fourth consecutive ACC quarterfinal appearance.
