Wolfpack erases 5-0 deficit to earn the victory
RALEIGH, N.C. –  The sixth-ranked NC State baseball team erased an early five-run deficit, headlined by six runs in the eighth inning, to rally for a 9-6 win against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets Sunday afternoon to clinch the series.
Â
Georgia Tech jumped out to a 5-0 advantage in the contest, but NC State countered with nine unanswered runs to take the lead and earn the win. The Wolfpack has now won all three of its ACC series this season and its last six conference series dating back to 2017.
Â
Sophomore Kent Klyman recorded the win on the mound to improve to 2-0 on the year, while Georgia Tech's Jared Datoc was charged with the loss and falls to 0-3.
Â
NC State moves to 20-4 on the year and 7-2 in ACC play, while Georgia Tech falls to 13-11 and 3-6 in conference action.

Overall thoughts...
"It's not just coming back from a 5-0 deficit against a really good Georgia Tech team who is an offensive ball club, it's the way that we did it," said head coach Elliott Avent. "We did it off two really good pitchers in Archer and Datoc and they got a lot out of English to start the game.
Â
"I think what makes this comeback so special and more impressive to me is the fact that we got off to that bad start on Friday in the series and we were able to rebound from that to win the series."
Â
Quick Hits
- Georgia Tech took the early lead in the game with a run in the second and four in the fifth inning, but NC State answered in the bottom half of the frame.
- Following singles from Josh McLain and Brett Kinneman, junior Evan Edwards stepped to the plate and belted a three-run opposite field home run to get the Wolfpack on the scoreboard, cutting the Yellow Jackets lead to 5-3.
- NC State retired Georgia Tech in order in the top of the eighth to grab momentum heading to the bottom of the inning.
- Edwards led off the inning with his second homer of the game to pull the Pack within a run at 5-4 with his seventh blast of the season, a solo shot to right field.
- It was the Greensboro, N.C., native's third multi-homer game of the season.
- Freshman Patrick Bailey started a two-out rally in the eighth with a single to right center and Shane Shepard pinch-hit for the Wolfpack and put together a great at-bat to draw a walk.
- Dillon Cooper followed with the go-ahead double down the right field line, as pinch-runners Terrell Tatum and Lawson McArthur scored from second and first, respectively, to make it 6-5.
- McLain kept the rally going with an RBI single to plate Cooper from second base.
- The NCAA's home run leader, Brett Kinneman, crushed a two-run homer to right field to put NC State ahead 9-5 with his 12th home run of the season.
- In all, the Wolfpack scored six runs in the eighth inning, the 15th time this season that the squad has tallied a big inning with four or more runs in the frame.
- Georgia Tech got a run back in the ninth after a solo homer from Kyle McCann, but Klyman rebounded to get the next batter to fly out to end the game.
Â
Inside the Box Score
- Edwards led the Wolfpack at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance, highlighted by four RBIs and a pair of homers. He was the only player in the game with three hits.
- Bailey, Cooper, Kinneman and McLain each turned in multi-hit games, while Brock Deatherage and Will Wilson each had a hit.
- Wilson's single extended his reached base safely streak to 39 games dating back to last season.
- Eight of NC State's nine runs were scored with two outs.
- NC State's pitchers only allowed the leadoff batter of the inning for Georgia Tech to reach once.
Â
Quoting Evan Edwards
"I was feeling great and seeing the ball really good. I got a fastball I could handle in the first at-bat and then in the second at-bat he was throwing quite a few changeups, so the coaches told us to sit back on it and I put a good swing on one."
Â
On the Mound
- Brian Brown started on the mound for the Wolfpack and turned in a strong performance with 6.1 innings and did not allow an earned run to go along with three strikeouts. The ACC's ERA leader now sports a 0.48 clip on the year.
- Nolan Clenney relieved him and faced two batters before handing the ball to Klyman.
- Klyman threw 2.1 innings with three strikeouts and yielded just one earned run to earn the win.
- NC State and Georgia Tech combined to walk just two batters in the contest, one for each team.
