Wolfpack sophomore claims prestigious honor
FAIRFAX, Va. – After turning in a strong sophomore campaign, NC State rifle's Claire Zanti has been named a recipient of the 2018 Arthur Ashe, Jr., Female Sports Scholar of the Year Award.
The accolade, which is given annually by Diverse: Issues In Higher Education magazine, recognizes student-athletes for exemplifying the highest standards of scholarship, athleticism and humanitarianism.
In addition to their athletic ability, students named Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars must maintain a cumulative grade average of at least 3.2, be at least a sophomore academically, and be active on their campuses or in their communities.
Zanti was the winner of the honor for the sport of rifle, while Haley Clark from the University of Georgia was the overall female winner of the award as a member of the Bulldogs' basketball team.
The Norfolk, Va., native appeared in 13 of the Wolfpack's 14 matches on the year, logging a season average of 584.385 in the air rifle competition, third best on the team. She also compiled a 569.846 clip in smallbore and the team's third-best aggregate average with an 1154.231.
As a biological sciences major, Zanti matched her career best in air rifle twice during the season, firing a score of 588 at The Citadel and against Nebraska at Navy. She charted a career high 576 in smallbore versus No. 15 Navy, highlighted by a perfect series in prone.
For the year, Zanti achieved five perfect series in air rifle and four in smallbore. Last week, she was named a Scholastic All-American by the Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA).
NC State finished the 2017-18 season with an 11-7 overall record and had an individual advance to the NCAA Championships for the third consecutive year, as graduate student Lauren Phillips finished 12th in the smallbore competition at the event.
