Haskins Award is Known as the Heisman of Golf
NC State men's golf junior Stephen Franken is on the Spring Watch list for the Haskins Award which is announced Thursday.
Twenty golfers are on the Watch List for the prestigious award. Franken is the only golfer from the ACC to make the list.
Known as the 'Heisman of Golf', the Haskins Award has been named in honor of Fred Haskins and has been given annually since 1971.
Haskins Award winners over the years include such notables as Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Luke Donald. Ole Miss' Braden Thornberry won the award last season after capturing the individual title at the NCAA Championship.
The Haskins Award is the oldest college golf award and is the only award that is voted on by players, coaches, SID's, and select golf media - there is no committee that makes this decision. Voting will open at the end of the NCAA Regionals and run through the end of the NCAA tournament.
Franken has recorded four consecutive top-5 finishes this year. He had three top-five finishes in the fall, including capturing his first individual title with a three-day score of 15-under-par at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate. Franken's score of 15-under-par tied an NC State program record for score in relation to par.
The Raleigh native started the spring season with a third-place finish at the Puerto Rico Classic. During the tournament, Franken set two tournament records at the 26-year event: Low Round (62) and Score Related to Par (-9).
FRANKEN MOVES UP SEVEN SPOTS IN ARNOLD PALMER CUP RANKINS
Franken is ranked 13th in the most recent Arnold Palmer cup rankings which were announced Thursday.
Franken is ranked 13th in the Feb. 22 Arnold Palmer Cup rankings and is the highest ranked ACC golfer in the rankings.
Franken was ranked 20th in the initial Arnold Palmer Cup rankings that were released on Feb. 8.
The top six golfers from the final ranking in the Spring from both the United States and International men and women - 12 total golfers - shall be among the 24 individuals selected to compete in the Arnold Palmer Cup July 6-8. The 2018 Arnold Palmer Cup will be the first using the expanded format of United States men's and women's collegiate golfers versus their counterparts from around the world. Â
Using Golfstat's NCAA Player Ranking as a base, the Arnold Palmer Cup Ranking awards bonus points for wins and high finishes and a penalty for poor finishes. The ranking also contains a strength of schedule component.Â
The remaining six men's and women's spots for the United States will consist of five committee selections, including at least one non-Division I golfer, and a coaches pick. The balance of the International team will include the men's and women's winners of The R&A Scholars Tournament, four committee selections and a coaches pick.
