NC State travels to Olympic Training Center
Match Information
RALEIGH, N.C. – Six members of the NC State rifle team will travel to Colorado Springs, Colo., this weekend to participate in the USA Shooting Winter Airgun Championships held at the Olympic Shooting Center.
Â
The event serves as the selection matches for the upcoming International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup next year in New Delhi, India, as well as part of the selection process for the World Cups later in the year in Munich, Germany and Beijing, China.
Senior Claire Spina, juniors Zach Eisenberg, Kendra Jacobs and Claire Zanti, along with freshmen Emily Fisher and Aron Tinter will represent the Wolfpack at the event.
Â
First-year NC State head coach Emily Holsopple is very familiar with the facility, as she trained at the center for several years after concluding her collegiate career. She was a member of the 2017-18 USA Shooting World Cup Team and was a 2016 Olympic Trials finalist.
Â
Awards will be presented to the top-three finishers in both the Open and Junior categories. Awards for the Open and Junior Categories will be presented at the conclusion of each match day.
Â
High-scoring awards will be presented to the top Visitor, Collegiate, Paralympic, and Senior, provided there are at least six competitors in each category, on the last day of the match. These awards will be awarded at the end of each day with the open awards based on final results and category awards based on the course of fire for that day. Day two awards will be the combination of Day one + Day two results as this will be the selection process.
Â
WAG has become an annual tradition for American Air Rifle/Air Pistol athletes every December in Colorado Springs as the ranges expand throughout the Olympic Training Center campus to include portable targets in gymnasiums to accommodate as many of the competitors as possible. Friday and Saturday will include separate Qualifications, with Finals for Open and Junior athletes each day. Sunday will once again feature Mixed Team (one man, one woman per team) matches.
Â
The 2019 World Cup season is of particular importance, as each stop will have valuable Olympic quota places available to the top finishers. An Olympic quota is essentially a country's ticket to participate in a specific event in the 2020 Olympic Games. Earning an Olympic quota in competition ensures the country a spot in that particular event, not necessarily the athlete. Athletes will earn Olympic Team slots via a trials system established by USA Shooting.
