Gonzalez-Ballbe and Mavor sign NLIs
Raleigh, N.C. -- NC State women's tennis has added two student-athletes to its 2019-2020 team, as announced by head coach Simon Earnshaw. Marta Gonzalez-Ballbe and Lana Mavor will arrive on campus in the fall of 2019.
"Marta and Lana are the first two pieces of an extremely important recruiting class for us," said head coach Simon Earnshaw. "Replacing that initial group from back in 2015 and what they have meant during the progression we've had since then was always going to be a difficult task. I expect to add to these first two signees in the coming weeks. Our outlook for the future of Pack women's tennis continues to grow steadily, thanks to our seniors from a position of strength. Go Pack!!"
MARTA GONAZALEZ-BALLBE
Marta Gonzalez-Ballbe will join the Wolfpack from Madrid, Spain. She currently is ranked No. 4 in the 18 & Under category in Spain. Ranked No. 1 in her region in the 18 & Under category, Gonzalez-Ballbe won the Madrid Championship last year. She has been ranked as high as No. 41 in Spain.
Gonzalez-Ballbe comes to the Wolfpack with a successful background, as her team has been regional champions 18 consecutive times. The team qualified for the Spanish National Team's Championship, where her squad placed fourth.
"I chose NC State because it meets all my expectations, both at the tennis and academic level. I also felt welcomed by the members of the team and the coaches."
Coach Earnshaw on Marta Gonzalez-Ballbe
"Prior to being at NC State, I've had a long history of working with Spanish players. It's taken until year five, but finally between David and I, we've been able to get that line of recruiting going again with Marta. Outside of Marta's excellent tennis background and athleticism, what struck us, and I think what strikes anyone who ever meets Marta, is just how sharp, engaging, and energetic she is. Both on and off the court she will bring an added element to the program and campus as a whole. I couldn't be more excited for Marta to join up and to begin working towards what I strongly believe will be a considerable and immediate impact on the program."
LANA MAVOR
Lana Mavor, a five-star recruit according to tennisrecruiting.net, comes from a tennis background. Her mother moved to the United States from Ukraine and played college tennis, while her father, Brian Mavor, played tennis at NC State. He lettered for the Wolfpack in 1984, 1985, and 1986.
In 2018, Mavor earned two bronze balls competing in doubles at the USTA Winter Nationals and in the Easter Bowl. She also took home second place at the USTA Spring Team Championships.
A finalist at the Level 3 Sectional Championship held at Yale University, she has been ranked as high as No. 41 in the class of 2019 and currently sits at No. 46. Mavor is ranked as the No. 1 women's tennis player in Maine and No. 5 in New England. In 18's, she has reached a USTA National No. 33. ranking.
"I chose NC State because of the beautiful campus, the perfect location, the best coaches and support staff, and the welcoming atmosphere. When I first visited the campus, I was surprised how happy everyone was and the amount of resources that are available to both students and student-athletes. I believe that NC State is the perfect place for me to start this new chapter in my life and I am beyond excited to be a part of the Wolfpack family."
Coach Earnshaw on Lana Mavor
"Lana Mavor is someone we've been tracking for a long time. It's very important for us that we have people who identify with this community and that understand the value of an NC State education. With Lana being a legacy, the main thing was getting her to campus and for her to be able to experience that for herself. She's a physical player with tremendous work ethic who has achieved a lot in her junior career despite having had limitations due to her location. I expect Lana to really make a jump when she enrolls next summer and be a contributor for us right away."
