Draw & Final Results
CARY, N.C. – Highlighted by sophomore Adriana Reami's 6-7, 7-5, 7-6 (6) singles flight final victory over Northwestern's Erin Larner, the No. 40-ranked player in Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) preseason poll, the NC State women's tennis team made it four wins out of four matches to cap off a successful third and final day at the Duke Bonk Invitational at the Cary Tennis Park in Cary, North Carolina.
Showing just how much the program has developed in recent years under head coach Simon Earnshaw, the Wolfpack improved its overall record at the Duke Bonk Invitational from 2-15 in 2015 to 13-5 in 2017.
Reami's time spent on the track throughout the preseason paid dividends, as she was able to remain composed down the stretch as she outlasted No. 40 Larner in a third-set tiebreaker.
While her win was the highlight of the day, NC State also saw three other victories. Sophomore Anna Rogers, fresh off of earning three doubles wins from as many matches with junior Claudia Wiktorin, defeated Rheeya Doshi of Northwestern 6-2, 5-7, 6-0 and secured third place in her flight, while Junior Bianca Moldovan also prevailed, as she beat Illinois' Asuka Kawai 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 to earn third place in hers. Playing in a consolation final, Wiktorin beat Mia Rabinowitz of Illinois 6-3, 7-6 (3).
Thoughts from Coach Earnshaw:
"Overall, I thought that was an excellent opening event for us. Certainly going 4-0 speaks volumes to the work we've been putting in, and we've been in school for a while so potentially that helped. We're a little bit limited with the eight-hour weeks, but one thing that doesn't change is the work we put in fitness wise, so I'm very happy with how we did. It's a huge improvement from how we did two years ago as we keep trying to build the program and I think we finished out on a high note with Adriana winning her singles flight. Moving on, we get the rest of the girls going next weekend and hopefully this level of play can carry over into that event also."
Up next
The Wolfpack travels to Minneapolis, Minnesota, where it takes part in the Gopher Invitational from Sept. 21-24 at the Baseline Tennis Center. For the Wolfpack, senior Tayla Stenta, junior Amanda Rebol and freshman Taylor Bridges will be participating.
